Am I in the know?
When I log into Yahoo and the home page lists the latest celebrity deaths, cancer diagnoses (celebrities only, please) , regular scandals (wealthy/famous people only, please), sex scandals (good looking celebrities and ugly politicians only, please) , hockey brawls, wars and the like - if I read them, do I really know what is happening in the world? Does it make me tuned in? Knowledgeable? Smart? Smarter than you?
The fact that someone tortured a cat to death in Windsor, Ontario last week makes me angry and sad. But who cares, really? That is only one animal torture death we know about, thanks to the news. I am sure there were many, many more animals that were tortured to death last week. Not to mention children who died untimely deaths, the elderly who died, death in war, death in disaster, death by overdose, suicide- then there are the two mosquitoes and one spider I killed last week.....
I can't do anything about it. Neither can you. Feeling one way or the other about it doesn't change a thing. Stuff happens. Knowing about it doesn't mean a thing. Talking about it means even less.
It is a shame when anyone dies accidentally or otherwise, but I can't stop it, so do I really need to know about it every time I go to log into my email? And why, oh why are celebrity deaths always mentioned? Are they special?
Do I really need to know the endless gruesome details of the latest disaster? What about all the disasters and deaths that go unreported? Why is this? Do they not merit the same amount of space on Yahoo? That will never happen.
I think that I will do my best this week to work hard, play harder and be nice to everyone (well, not everyone). That is all I can do. Live my little life and thank God I live in a safe place and that I have electricity, clean hot and cold running water and a fridge full of food. And a flush toilet.
I am NOT going to prance around pretending I know it all just because I know what is in the news. Neither should you.
